Lemon hydrosol, also known as lemon floral water or lemon distillate, is a gentle, aromatic by-product derived from the steam distillation of fresh lemon peels (Citrus limon). During the process of extracting lemon essential oil, steam passes through the lemon peels, capturing the volatile water-soluble compounds and aromatic molecules. Once condensed and separated from the essential oil, the remaining aqueous solution is known as the hydrosol. Unlike essential oils, which are highly concentrated and often require dilution, lemon hydrosol is mild, water-based, and safe for direct use on the skin and in various applications, including skincare, haircare, and natural home cleaning.
Rich in micronutrients, trace essential oils, and plant acids, lemon hydrosol retains many of the therapeutic properties of the lemon plant, including antioxidant, antibacterial, and toning effects. It is known for its refreshing citrus aroma, which is bright, slightly sweet, and energizing. With a natural low pH and astringent qualities, lemon hydrosol is particularly valued in aromatherapy, botanical skincare, and holistic wellness for its balancing, cleansing, and revitalizing properties. It is also appreciated for being gentle enough for sensitive skin, unlike lemon essential oil, which can be phototoxic and irritating if not used properly.
