STAR ANISE

Star anise is a star-shaped spice derived from the fruit of the Illicium verum tree, native to northeast Vietnam and southern China. It belongs to the Schisandraceae family and is easily recognized by its eight-pointed star-like appearance. Each point of the star contains a shiny brown seed, and the entire fruit is used in both culinary and medicinal applications. Its distinctive flavor is sweet and licorice-like, similar to anise seed, although the two come from unrelated plant families. In traditional Chinese medicine and Ayurvedic practices, star anise has been used for centuries due to its potent antifungal, antibacterial, and antioxidant properties. It is also a key source of shikimic acid, an important compound used in the production of antiviral drugs. Rich in essential oils like anethole, star anise is valued not only as a flavoring agent in food and beverages but also as a botanical ingredient in natural skincare formulations.

Star anise contains compounds such as anethole, linalool, and shikimic acid, which have powerful antimicrobial and antifungal effects.
